The Glorious Mysteries
Said on Wednesdays, and Sundays throughout the
year.
- The First Glorious Mystery: The
Resurrection of Jesus. Now on the first day of the week Mary
Magdalene came to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw that the
stone had been taken away from the tomb. So she ran, and went to Simon
Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them,
"They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have
laid him." Peter came out with the other disciple, and they went toward
the tomb. They both ran, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached
the tomb first; and stooping to look in, he saw the linen cloths lying there,
but he did not go in. Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went
into the tomb; he saw the linen cloths lying, and the napkin, which had been
on his head, not lying with the linen cloths, but rolled up in a place by
itself. (John 20:1-7)
-
The Second
Glorious Mystery: The Ascension of Jesus. Jesus himself
stood among them, and said to them, "Peace to you." But they were
startled and frightened, and supposed that they saw a spirit. And he
said to them, "Why are you troubled, and why do questionings rise in your
hearts? See my hands and my feet, that it is I myself; handle me, and
see; for a spirit has not flesh and bones as you see that I have." Then
he opened their minds to understand the scriptures, and said to them, "Thus it
is written, that the Christ should suffer and on the third day rise from the
dead, and that repentance and forgiveness of sins should be preached in his
name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem. You are witnesses of
these things. And behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you; but
stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high." Then he
led them out as far as Bethany, and lifting up his head he blessed them.
While he blessed them, he parted from them and was carried up into heaven.
(Luke 24:36-39,45-53)
-
The Third
Glorious Mystery: The Descent of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost.
When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place.
And suddenly a sound came from heaven like the rush of a mighty wind, and it
filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared to them
tongues as of fire, distributed and resting on each one of them. And
they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues,
as the Spirit gave them utterance.
(Acts 2:1-4)
-
The Fourth
Glorious Mystery: The Assumption of Mary into Heaven. The
Most Blessed Virgin Mary, when the course of her earthly life was completed,
was taken up body and soul into the glory of heaven, where she already shares
in the glory of her Son's resurrection, anticipating the resurrection of all
members of his Body. (CCC, Part
One, #974)
-
The Fifth
Glorious Mystery: The Coronation of Mary as Queen of Heaven and Earth.
Finally the Immaculate Virgin, preserved free from all stain of original sin,
when the course of her earthly life was finished, was taken up body and soul
into heavenly glory, and exalted by the Lord as Queen over all things, so that
she might be more fully conformed to her Son, the Lord of lords and conqueror
of sin and death. (CCC, Part One,
#966)
