The Luminous Mysteries
Said on Thursday's throughout the year.
-
The First Luminous Mystery: The
Baptism of Jesus in the River Jordan. Then Jesus came from
Galilee to the Jordan to John, to be baptized by him. John would have
prevented him, saying, "I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?"
But Jesus answered him, "Let it be so now; for thus it is fitting for us to
fulfill all righteousness." Then he consented. And when Jesus was
baptized, he went up immediately from the water, and behold, the heavens were
opened and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and alighting on
him; and lo, a voice from heaven, saying, "This is my beloved Son, with whom I
am well pleased." (Matthew 3:13-17)
-
The Second
Luminous Mystery: The Wedding at Cana, Christ Manifested. On the
third day, there was a marriage at Cana in Galilee, and the mother of Jesus
was there; Jesus also was invited to the marriage, with his disciples.
When the wine failed, the mother of Jesus said to him, "They have no wine."
And Jesus said to her, "O woman, what have you to do with me? My hour
has not yet come." His mother said to the servants, "Do whatever he
tells you." Now six stone jars were standing there, for the Jewish rites
of purification, each holding twenty or thirty gallons. Jesus said to
them, "Fill the jars with water." And they filled them to the brim.
He said to them, "Now draw some out, and take it to the steward of the feast."
So they took it. When the steward of the feast tasted the water now
become wine, and did not know where it came from (though the servants who had
drawn the water knew), the steward of the feast called the bridegroom and said
to him, "Every man serves the good wine first; and when men have drunk freely,
then the poor wine; but you have kept the good wine until now." This,
the first of his signs, Jesus did at Cana in Galilee, and manifested his
glory; and his disciples believed in him. (John
2:1-11)
-
The Third Luminous
Mystery: The Proclamation of the Kingdom of God. The
Spirit immediately drove him out into the wilderness. And he was in the
wilderness forty days, tempted by Satan; and he was with the wild beasts; and
the angels ministered to him. Now after John was arrested, Jesus came
into Galilee, preaching the gospel of God, and saying, "The time is fulfilled,
and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent, and believe in the gospel."
(Mark 1:12-15)
-
The Fourth
Luminous Mystery: The Transfiguration of Jesus. And after six
days Jesus took with him Peter and James and John his brother, and led them up
a high mountain apart. And he was transfigured before them, and his face
shone like the sun, and his garments became white as light. And behold,
there appeared to them Moses and Elijah, talking with him. And Peter
said to Jesus, "Lord, it is well that we are here; if you wish, I will make
three booths here, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah." He
was still speaking, when lo, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice
from the cloud said, "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased;
listen to him." When the disciples heard this, they fell on their faces,
and were filled with awe. But Jesus came and touched them, saying,
"Rise, and have no fear." And when they lifted up their eyes, they saw
no one but Jesus only. (Matthew 17:1-8)
-
The Fifth Luminous
Mystery: The Last Supper, the Holy Eucharist. Now as they were
eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed, and broke it, and gave it to the
disciples and said, "Take, eat; this is my body." And he took a cup, and
when he had given thanks he gave it to them, saying, "Drink of it, all of you;
for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the
forgiveness of sins." (Matthew 26:26-28)
